Earl Sterndale's Outdoor Curriculum
Outdoor Learning at Earl Sterndale
At Earl Sterndale CofE Primary School, we recognise the vital role outdoor learning plays in children's development. It supports physical and mental wellbeing, builds confidence and encourages curiosity, resilience, and teamwork in a way that complements classroom learning.
We provide a broad outdoor learning programme, delivered by our own school staff in partnership with White Hall, a leading Derbyshire Outdoor Education provider.
Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of our children, with each session building on previous experiences and skills as they progress through school. This approach helps foster a growth mindset – encouraging attitudes like “I can do it!” and “Let’s try again!” – which enhances all areas of learning.
Collaboration – As children move through our outdoor learning programme, we aim to shift their mindset from ‘me’ to ‘we’, promoting teamwork, empathy and a caring school community.
Risk – While all activities are carefully risk assessed, we believe learning to manage risk is an essential life skill. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves and take calculated risks in a safe and supportive environment.
Resilience – Some children naturally bounce back from setbacks, while others need support to develop this skill. We help children learn to reframe challenges and approach them with determination and confidence. After all, if you aren’t failing, you aren’t learning!
