Religious Education - Class 2

In Class 2, Religious Education (RE) follows the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus (2025-2030) and supports our vision of "Making Good Decisions Together". Through the study of Christianity and other religions and worldviews, pupils develop understanding, respect and curiosity about the beliefs, values and experiences of people in modern Britain and across the wider world.

RE is taught through an enquiry-based approach, encouraging children to ask thoughtful questions, investigate different viewpoints and reflect on their own beliefs and values. Through discussion, research, visits, visitors and creative activities, pupils learn to:

  • Understand and describe a range of religious beliefs, practices and ways of life.
  • Ask and respond to significant questions about meaning, purpose, identity and values.
  • Develop respect, empathy and understanding for people with different beliefs and worldviews.
  • Reflect on their own experiences, beliefs and values in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Use appropriate religious vocabulary to explain their ideas and understanding.

Throughout Key Stage 2, children explore a range of 'big questions', including:

  • What do different people believe about God?
  • Why do some people think God exists?
  • What matters most to Christians and Humanists?
  • What does it mean to be a Hindu, Muslim, Jewish or Christian in Britain today?
  • What can religions teach us about caring for others and the world around us?
  • How can religious beliefs help people respond to challenges in life?

As a Church of England school, Christianity is taught as a living faith and forms a significant part of our curriculum. Pupils also study Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Humanism and other worldviews, helping them to understand and appreciate the diversity of beliefs found within our local, national and global communities.

Through Religious Education, we aim to develop thoughtful, respectful and reflective learners who are equipped to engage positively with the diverse world around them.

R.E. is taught on a four-year rolling programme, detailed in the document below.
