Mathematics - Class 2
In Class 2, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme - a mastery-based approach designed to build deep understanding and confidence. Our lessons focus on small, carefully sequenced steps, ensuring pupils develop strong number sense, reasoning abilities and problem-solving skills.
We practice our Multiplication Tables daily before each Maths lesson, using a combination of Times Tables Rockstars (which we love!) and mathematical songs, chanting, and patterns.
For our Maths lessons, we split into Upper and Lower Key Stage groups (Y5/6 and Y3/4). This enables us to target appropriate levels of learning with every child, and adapt our teaching to suit our children accordingly.
We begin every lesson with a ‘Flashback 4’ activity, designed to help children access and recall prior learning, and keep knowledge fresh in their minds. During lessons, children are encouraged to take control of their own learning, taking part in group discussions and individual activities, before completing their independent tasks. Children learn not just how to do maths, but why it works. We encourage curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning, helping every child to become a fluent and flexible mathematician. There is no such thing as ‘I can’t do maths!’.
We are committed to making maths accessible for every child. Using the White Rose approach, we provide additional scaffolding, adapted resources, and targeted interventions for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Our teachers use concrete materials, visual models, and personalised strategies to ensure all learners can engage with the curriculum and experience success. Every child is supported to progress at their own pace, building confidence and independence in a nurturing environment.
