Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. It was first introduced in April 2011. Since then the amount schools receive has increased. A school receives funding based on the number of pupils who are eligible for free school meals in any given year.

Currently, 27% of our pupils qualify for Pupil Premium. This funding has been, and will continue to be, used to help fund our general Teaching Assistant hours whose time will be at least partly focused on assisting those children who add to our Pupil Premium funding. We also use the funding to provide valuable resources.

Key Principles for using Pupil Premium at Earl Sterndale CofE Primary School

At our school, we have a commitment to raise achievement for pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium. We never confuse eligible pupils with low ability and strive to 'bring out the best' in this group of pupils and support them to achieve the highest levels. We provide a range of support aimed at addressing the specific needs of eligible pupils in all areas of their school life.

Schools can decide the best ways to spend their Pupil Premium Funding, following government advice, such as:

  • Training for teachers and teaching assistants
  • Nurture sessions
  • Well-being support
  • Small group teaching of English and Maths
  • 1:1 reading intervention work linked to Monster Phonics and Spelling
  • Use of dedicated and targeted computer software programs
  • Subsidised funding for school visits, residentials and other activities

Please read the information below which gives details of our Pupil Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.
