How Parents and Carers Can Support Smilers at Home
Children's emotional wellbeing is strongest when home and school work together. You can support the Derbyshire Smilers approach by encouraging open conversations about feelings and helping your child develop positive strategies for managing everyday challenges.
You can help by:
- Talking regularly about feelings and emotions in a calm, non-judgemental way.
- Encouraging your child to tell you about their day, including both successes and worries.
- Praising effort, perseverance and resilience, not just achievement.
- Helping your child develop healthy routines, including good sleep habits, regular exercise and balanced nutrition.
- Modelling positive ways to manage stress and setbacks.
- Encouraging participation in activities that build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.
- Reminding your child that it is okay to ask for help when they need it.
We want children to understand that everyone experiences a range of emotions and that seeking support is a sign of strength. By working together, we can help our children become confident, resilient and emotionally healthy young people who are ready to make good decisions and thrive both in school and beyond.
If you have any concerns about your child's emotional wellbeing, please contact school. We are always happy to listen, offer support and work together to ensure every child feels safe, valued and able to flourish.
